Windows 11 guide

Organize your Downloads
in Windows 11.

Windows 11 hides the mess by grouping Downloads by date, but it's still thousands of files deep. Here's how to clear it properly with what's built in, and keep it clear.

1. Turn off the date groups

Open Downloads in File Explorer, choose Sort → Group by → (None), then View → Details. Sort by Type and everything of the same kind sits together.

2. Clear the installers and duplicates

Installers (.exe, .msi) are the biggest waste of space and you rarely need them again. Files ending in (1) or (2) are almost always duplicate downloads. Select them and press Delete; they go to the Recycle Bin, so nothing is lost straight away.

3. Let Storage Sense handle old files

Windows 11 can clear out files you've forgotten about:

  1. 1Open Settings → System → Storage → Storage Sense.
  2. 2Turn on Automatic User content cleanup.
  3. 3Under Delete files in my Downloads folder, pick how long they can sit unopened (for example 60 days).

4. Sort new downloads as they arrive

Storage Sense only deletes. To move invoices to Documents, photos to Pictures and zips to Archives the moment they land, set up a few TidyFile rules. It runs from the tray, starts when you sign in, and shows a preview before it touches existing files.

The TidyFile rule

Invoices by year

When a file
name contains invoice or receipt
Then
move to Documents\Invoices\{year}

Set it up once and TidyFile applies it in the background, to new files the moment they arrive. Preview what it'll do to the files already there, and undo anything from the activity log.

Questions

Where is the Downloads folder in Windows 11?+

Open File Explorer and choose Downloads in the left-hand pane, or go to C:\Users\your-name\Downloads. Browsers save there unless you change it in their download settings.

Can Windows 11 organize downloads automatically?+

Only partly. Storage Sense can delete files you haven't opened for a while, but Windows has no built-in way to move new downloads into folders by type or name. TidyFile adds that, with rules that run in the background.

How do I stop Windows grouping my Downloads by date?+

In File Explorer, open Downloads, choose Sort → Group by → (None). Windows groups Downloads by Date modified by default, which hides how many files are really in there.
